Inhambane is bordered to the North by the Provinces of Manica and Sofala, to the South and East by the Indian Ocean, and to the West by the Province of Gaza, and is considered as perhaps one of the best quality tourist regions in Mozambique.

Apart from the excellent beaches stretching all along the coast, and the famous tourist destination the Archipelago of Bazaruto, the interior holds natural parks where various species of wildlife can be observed.

In the city of Inhambane, capital of the Province, the visitor can visit the local museum and monuments and places that are testimony to the presence of the people that have passed through this land.

The towns of Maxixe, Quissico and Vilankulo are other urban centres of interest to visit, to shop and admire the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The main ethnic groups are the Matshwa, Bitonga and Chopi.

How to Get There

The EN1 from Maputo or the EN6 from Zimbabwe, taking the EN1 fork in Inchope.
The Province of Inhambane has two aerodromes, one in the City of Inhambane and the other in Vilankulo. Both receive regular and charter flights from Maputo, Beira and South Africa.

What to Visit

The Inhambane Museum, where on display are musical and agricultural instruments, photographs of the colonial era and a number of artifacts typical of African culture. In the Casa da Cultura there is a very old locomotive on show. The Cathedral of Nª Srª da Conceição built in the XVIII century. The Inhambane Mosque built during the middle of the XIX century.

Tourist Hotspots

Relax on the numerous beaches on the coast, namely Zavala, Zavora, Tofo, Baía dos Cocos, Barra, Jangamo,Pomene and many more.
At Vilankulo and Inhassoro, a fishing center with a beautiful beach, excellent for anglers. In front extends the National Archipelago of Bazaruto, about 780 Km from Maputo.
The idyllic Archipelago of Bazaruto consists of four islands, Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, and Santa Carolina and to swim and dive in the clear limpid waters of the Indian Ocean next to the coral reefs rich in rare and beautiful vegetation and marine species, is an unforgettable experience.
Bird lovers can find in the Bazaruto National Park 164 different species of birds, some quite rare. For those who love to seashells, magnificent examples are to be found here worthy of the best collections.
Photographers will find that the light, especially towards evening, associated to the beauty of the landscape provides opportunities to capture on camera.

Fairs and Events

Every year the “Marimbeiros of Zavala” hold their Festival. This group of men is Very Well known not only in Mozambique but also in other parts of Africa for playing the “timbila.” Another of their talents is reciting spontaneous verse.

The sea conditions are very favorable for the practice of nautical sports. Those lovers of deep-sea fishing will find a large number of species ready for the catch, in particular the needlefish from April to August and the marlin from middle September to December.
